The future is now! Technology has come in leaps and bounds since we hit the new century and all those sci-fi movies we loved seem to be coming true. But technology doesn’t stop with devices. In fact, it’s now leaked into our fashion as well, with the fashion of the future right on our doorsteps.
Take a look at some of the things you could be wearing very soon!
Inflatable Puffer Jacket
Safety first guys! This collection from Christopher Raeburn, known as “Raft”, features primary-coloured inflatable latex puffer jackets that could keep you safe on the high seas. Although they look a little funny, they’re certainly a step up from your common floaties, making survival sexy (maybe).
The Projection Dress
One dress to rule them all – this outfit, worn by American musician Carrie Underwood, was stunning even before she started singing but as she did, down went the lights and on came a serious of stunning patterns traversing the dress. Using projector technology, the dress is transformed into a whole new look. Although this was just for a show where it could be tightly choreographed, we think this could become a trend as the technology evolves.
Fashionable Fitness Trackers
Fitness trackers are the latest craze in wearable technology and we are already seeing some beautiful pieces that offer both aesthetics and practicality in our day-to-day lives. From FitBit and Tory Burch with their gold and silver bracelet bands to Swarovski and Misfit offering solar-powered blinged up activity trackers, keeping track has never looked so good.
Wearable Rehab
Physiotherapy requires regular treatment and exercise but it can be hard and costly, both in time and money, to keep up. For those in rehabilitation for an injury or disorder, continual monitoring can make or break the process. Pauline van Dongen in cooperation with TU Eindhoven & Textile Museum has created a line of cardigans that do just this. Vigour is a piece made with knit stretch sensors that continually monitor the wearer’s movement so carers and therapists can keep an eye on the process 24/7 and speed up recovery. Dongen has also developed a series of other tech-forward fashion pieces – most recently the ground breakingSolar Shift garment range which cleverly incorporates flexible and rigid solar panels to gather the suns rays and charge your portable devices.

Bracelet Charger
Our phones are practically attached to our hands these days. But keeping them charged on the go is difficult. With Rebecca Minkoff’s bracelet for Case Mate, you can stay charged and up to date anytime! The bracelet looks beautiful on your wrist, but transforms into a USB cable when undone! These brilliant creations have also been designed specially for the lads too, so they don’t feel left out of the tech-forward fashion circle!
Radiator’s Shark Deterrent Wet Suit
As our encounters with sharks become more commonplace in Australia, the debate between sharks as friend or foe has become an increasingly contentious topic. To help find a happy medium to keep our fishy friends alive and humanoids a little safer, Radiator have developed a range of wetsuits for dive and surf that actually deter sharks. Radiator discovered these apex predators relied heavily on their vision when hunting, so the company developed and tested a series of uniquely patterned wetsuits that allow users to hide in plain sight when in the water without compromising comfort and mobility.
LED Screen TshirtOS
A 100% cotton, machine washable t-shirt that connects to the internet and has the ability to post your tweets, take and share photos and videos while you wear it? Enter TshirtOS, a unique in-the-making development by whisky maker Ballantine and tech-clothier CuteCircuit. The shirt (currently still in the prototype stages of development) can be controlled remotely by your phone, making it fast and simple to update the images and messages you decide to wear. We’ve watched videos and demos of this shirt more times than we can count, and while it is amazing, we have some reservations whether this was a well-conceived publicity stunt, or if this tee is 100% 4Real!
Are you already wearing tech gear? What are you looking forward to most?
